What should I know about breast lift?

The primary reason why women perform a breast lift (mastopexy) is the desire to improve breast shape. Over the years - especially with heavy weight loss, after pregnancy or hormonal changes such as menopause - changes the structure of the breast. In particular, there is a loss of volume, which more or less strongly influences the breast contour, depending on the nature of the skin.

The so-called Cooper ligaments, which ensure a natural support function, relax with time - this is due to gravity special in larger and heavier breasts.

Different degrees define the expression

The transfer of the breast down is medically also called ptosis. The result is usually a simultaneous simultaneous lowering of the glandular tissue and the region of the nipple, the nipple-areola complex. In more pronounced stages, this shift may also be asynchronous, so that the nipple is located prominently deep at the lower pectoral pole or even points down.

Plastic surgeons use the three-step Regnault classification to determine ptosis severity. It describes the position of the nipple in relation to the under-breast fold, the so-called inframammary fold or IF:

Breast-tightening (mastopexy) - ptosis-expression after Regnault Breast-tightening (mastopexy) - ptosis-expression after Regnault

Grade 1: Nipple is at the level of the inframammary fold / IF
Grade 2: Nipple is slightly below the IF, but above most of the breast
Grade 3:Nipple is well below the IF

Breastfeeding is good for baby and breast

In addition, there is the concept of pseudoptosis: This causes a sagging of the lower part of the breast below the inframammary fold, but with the nipple above or at the level of the IF. Such a situation occasionally occurs immediately after infant weaning when the mammary glands recede faster than the remainder of the hormonally altered breast.

By the way and contrary to many concerns: Many studies testify that breastfeeding a baby does not change the breast shape in any way negative! It is just the pregnancy itself that can affect the subsequent appearance of the breast.

Question of genes and taste

But here, too, a decisive factor is and remains the genetic predisposition. Many women - with or without children - have a stable breast into old age, while others already have mature and very feminine breasts in early youth. Whether you call such a breast shape "hanging-chest" and possibly even consider a breast lift, is certainly a very individual question of taste - influenced by zeitgeist, fashion and the immediate environment.

But one should not be guided by perfectionism. A supposedly perfect breast, for example, can not be scarred or lost in size. A good indicator of whether you benefit from mastopexy is likely to be a significant amount of suffering in a very sagging breast.
